SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) – Representatives of the Virginia State Department of Health say two people died and 18 others were hospitalized as a result of a respiratory virus epidemic in the retirement community.
Fairfax County Health Department says 54 out of 263 Greenspring Retirement Community residents in Springfield, Virginia, were at risk of an outbreak. During the last two weeks, sick people showed symptoms such as cough, fever and pneumonia.
Representatives of the health department say they quarantined sections of the building that were supposed to contain the infection. Greenspring does not take in new residents because the camp is being researched.
Health Department spokesman Benjamin Schwartz said two patients who died were hospitalized with pneumonia, but were "elderly people with complex medical problems."
