Crown and smell – feel nothing, taste nothing

Loss of smell or taste is now considered an important symptom of Covid 19. New research shows what is happening in the nose.

It’s quite annoying when the best smells disappear. When cooking and eating, the aromas of autumn leaves, the magic of Advent and the cuddly toys on the knees are also missing. There are no longer any unpleasant odor marks, but the deterioration in quality of life is still significant. At the beginning of the pandemic, sensory disturbance was only noticed as a side effect, but patients found it particularly irritating.

In the meantime, restrictions on smell and taste have long been recognized as one of the main symptoms of Sars-CoV-2 infection. According to the German Robert Koch Institute, complaints are reported by 21 percent of the victims. In specialist articles, a frequency of 30 to 40 percent is sometimes given. Especially in patients who otherwise have almost no symptoms, often the only thing that experiences them is an absence or altered sense of smell.
