The pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson was sentenced to pay an amount of USD 8,000 million to a man who sued her for not warning that one of her antipsychotic drugs could increase men's breast size.
The judgment was issued by a jury of the Court of Justice in Philadelphia (USA), establishing the relationship between the injury and the use of Risperdal, a medicine indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia.
The ruling favored 26-year-old Nicholas Murray, whose case is one of thousands of such cases pending.
The young man's lawyers argued that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of J&J, prioritized its profits over patient health by promoting their drug Risperdal, whose active compound is risperidone.
According to a lawsuit filed by Murray, the young man developed his breasts after his doctors prescribed the medicine in 2003. This condition is known as gynecomastia.
