Author: Andualem Sisay Gessesse – The Ethiopian government arrested 36 people accused of having hidden prisons in the whole country and committing crimes against humanity, as well as 27 accusations of robbing the nation's wealth.
"Over the past five months, we've been gathering evidence about people involved in crimes against humanity in various parts of the country," said Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye, who said there were still people hiding in the country and abroad.
Committing gangster rape, sodomy in unregistered prisons, using forbidden torture techniques, denying the sunlight, prolonged exposure to heat and killing prisoners, belong to the crimes against humanity that the suspects committed, according to Berhanu, who informed the journalists in his office on Monday.
He stated that in Addis Ababa there were seven unregistered prisoners in which crimes were committed, while similar crimes were also committed in other parts of the country, mainly by intelligence officers.
He noted that one of the purposes of these tortures was forcing suspects to take prisoners that they had committed crimes, as well as forcing some politicians to leave the office.
For many years, international human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch have issued reports of crimes against humanity in various parts of the country, which the regime denied.
Regarding the assassination of Abiji's prime minister, the prosecutor-general pointed out that he was organized by the former chief of intelligence of the country, but not by the institution.
Currently, those who have raided a bomb attack are in jail for their direct involvement. The Attorney General claims that he was investigating people for the attack and finalized the investigation that led to the former intelligence chief in the country.
The former chief of intelligence in the country, which the prosecutor general did not mention, mentioned by name and surname that "everyone knows who the former head of intelligence was."
Getsew Assef, who lost his position after Prime Minister Abiy came to power, was the former head of the Ethiopian intelligence, whose face was still unknown to the public.
Mr. Getachew is currently based in Mekelle and has recently been appointed head of security at the Tigray Region and a member of the Tigray Liberation Front central committee (TPLF).
Answering the question of whether it would be difficult to arrest the former head of intelligence and now the head of security of the Tigray region, the prosecutor general of Berhanu said: "Not to mention the region's chief of security, even if he is president or leader, he is not above the law … We are all below the law. "
Because alleged crimes are international crimes prohibited by international law, which Ethiopia is a signatory, the government is currently discussing with various countries to bring hiding abroad, according to the prosecutor general.
The TPLF was the most powerful group in the ruling coalition (Revolutionary Ethiopian Front – EPRDF) since the rebel group took power in May 1991, Forming the current coalition.
But after the arrival of Prime Minister Abiy, who comes from the Democratic Party in Oromo – one of the four member parties of the ruling coalition – the dominance and influence of TPLF in EPRDF is decreasing.
You rob the wealth of the nation
The Attorney General also stated that an additional 27 former army officers, their accomplices and brokers allegedly participated in illegal financial means abroad, abusing their duties and responsibilities, as well as leading a corrupt military company known as Metal Engineering Technology Corporation (METEC).
He stated that in the seven years from 2010/11 to 2016/17 generals and military officers responsible for METEC and their subsidiaries made purchases worth more than $ 2 billion, often up to 400% of the overstate / excessive price of purchased products and services. .
It is indicated that most of the purchases were made from China and Malaysia through their clients who have blood ties with military generals and representatives. As a result, the defendants and their allies hid huge amounts of money abroad, including assets such as companies. They are also accused of making purchases in similar companies without a proper tender, which is inconsistent with government regulations and procedures.
Speaking of local transactions that METEC did, the Attorney General also stated that transactions worth several billion dollars were also carried out with family members of METEC officials and their relatives, as well as with people who have direct business contacts with them.
METEC has engaged in mega projects, from the production and maintenance of military equipment, to the construction of dams and ladies in Ethiopia worth many billions of dollars and in several sugar factories.
Among the crimes, the military officers responsible for METEC also include the purchase and use of two ships without an Ethiopian flag and the conduct of illegal interests between Mogadishu and Iran. They are also accused of buying an old, damaged floor from Israel, whose government does not know his whereabouts.
In order to arrest the others, who are involved both in crimes against humanity and the assault on the nation, the government will reveal pictures of suspects who will soon receive public aid and will apprehend them, according to the prosecutor general.
