Berlin (dpa / tmn) – People with type 2 diabetes have a good chance of getting sick by changing their diet and increasing their control over exercise. First of all, overweight people should lose weight – explains the diabetologist prof. Knut Mai from Charité in Berlin. Obesity and type 2 diabetes are closely related.
In people with type 2 diabetes – the most common type of diabetes – the body produces insulin that lowers blood sugar, but it does not work properly in cells. This so-called insulin resistance can also result from organ obesity.
If type 2 diabetes loses weight and moves on, fat burning is strengthened, and organs and muscles respond better to insulin. People affected by this problem should always strive primarily for a healthier lifestyle. Only if it does not lead to the goal, drugs are used.
However, to achieve approximately the correct level of sugar in the blood, a rather large reduction in body weight is helpful – emphasizes prof. Andreas Pfeiffer from the German Institute for Nutritional Research (DIfE) in Potsdam-Rehbrücke. Anyone who loses at least 15 kilos in the first six years after getting diabetes, has the best chance, according to a study in the UK.
Most overweight patients Mai starts with the help of the so-called formula diet. Meals are partially or completely replaced by liquid dissolved in the liquid. "The patient will only use 800 calories per day for about eight weeks" – explained prof. Mai.
It is important that this is done under the supervision of a physician. Why? "In most cases, rapid weight loss also causes a drop in blood pressure – then the drug should be adjusted accordingly." According to the diet prof. Mai, patients quickly lose from 8 to 15 percent of their body mass.
According to Pfeiffer and Mai, it is more difficult to maintain weight. "Unfortunately, we see that patients are recovering quickly," says Mai. His tip: in the nutrition consultation you can find out what the optimal diet can look like. "Research suggests that it should be more rich in protein and have a low glycemic index."
Mai recommends relatives of people affected by this disease. First of all, it's difficult to eat healthy when others are not at the table. Second, a balanced diet is healthy for everyone.
In addition, exercise is important to lose as much fat as possible, but to reduce muscle mass as part of weight loss. The maize experience goes best in the group. "Find a training partner or an entire working group" – this is his advice. So the inhibition threshold is bigger, do not go to training. In the end, someone is waiting there.
