Those of you who are on vacation should remember three illnesses after a long vacation, JAKARTA – Christmas during the Covid-19 pandemic has become a difficult day for Indonesians to decide to leave or stay at home.

The government provides joint leave from late October to early November in connection with the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. Exactly at the end of October, there are 5 days off from October 28, 2020 to November 1, 2020.

Practitioner and clinical researcher at the University of Indonesia, Ari Fahrial Syam, explained that coping with the Covid-19 pandemic was counterproductive. First, people are asked to stay home, but on the other hand, various discounts and promotions are excluded from the cost of planes and hotels. Finally, some choose to leave home on vacation.

“On Tuesday, the day before Christmas, there was already a traffic jam in Puncak. On Wednesday, October 28, 2020, traffic jams occurred on various roads, “Ari said in a press release on Thursday (October 29, 2020).

Ari said after this condition, there was still hope that the long vacation would not repeat with the previous vacation, there was an increase in Covid-19 cases after the vacation. Moreover, there was a drastic increase after the Eid holiday, the number of Covid-19 cases reached 25,000 in early June 2020.

Similarly, for the long vacations at the end of August 2020, there was an increase, especially for family clusters, and the number of additional cases for us was around 3,000 per day. Currently, the increase in the number of cases per day in the country is on average over 4,000 per day.

In addition to fears that there will be an increase in Covid-19 cases, Ari Fahrial warned that there are several groups of diseases that are at risk of developing due to these long vacations. Ari explained that there are three kinds of diseases that will occur during this festival, namely; diseases caused by fatigue, as well as chronic diseases that recur after holidays, as well as accidents that occur during holidays.

“Of course, fatigue and the relapse of chronic diseases will have an impact on the development of Covid-19 infection,” he continued.

Here are some details about the 3 types of diseases that could potentially occur after a long vacation during the Covid-19 pandemic.

1. Disease caused by fatigue

Diseases that usually appear after a vacation or a tiring journey include upper respiratory tract infections and diarrhea.

To come on vacation, you have to make a tiring journey by your own vehicle or public transport. In addition, when traveling, people only eat what is.

“Especially in an era of a pandemic like this, they think twice about eating and drinking in existing restaurants, especially when the restaurant is full,” he said.

This situation will weaken travelers’ immunity after the holidays. In this case, travelers are prone to colds or upper respiratory infections.

Additionally, there is a tendency to buy delicious food or drinks during the trip homemade or packaged when traveling when food safety and hygiene are in doubt. As a result, a person is prone to diarrhea.

“Both diseases, both ARI and diarrhea, are very dominant among tourists,” he explained.

Also, since generally travelers do not rest or move in the vehicle, it is common for travelers to experience headaches and aches.

According to Ari, this situation can usually be overcome by getting a good night’s sleep. The problem is that those on vacation tend to forget their own fatigue. So that the state of fatigue worsens due to lack of attention.

“Of course, this situation will worsen the human immune system, making it vulnerable to infections, one of which is the Covid-19 infection. Especially if the principles of the health protocol are not being applied consistently, ”he said.

2. Recurrent chronic diseases

Chronic diseases return after the summer holidays. While on vacation, in addition to enjoying a location at a vacation spot, people generally look for delicious culinary delights as well. Tourists also choose to eat and drink in these culinary venues.

Of course, this should be a concern, in addition to consuming foods and beverages that are high in calories and fat, when eating together in enclosed restaurants, you should also be concerned about transferability to other guests.

“We know that the food and drink delivered tend to be more numerous and varied. Overall, these foods and drinks are high in fat, sweet and salty. The delicacy of the dishes served in the restaurant is usually accompanied by a variety of high-calorie drinks, said Ari. .

Ari admitted that this food and drink is also consumed by someone who already has a chronic disease so that the disease can recur.

In addition, diabetics tend to have uncontrolled blood sugar levels. People with high blood pressure have uncontrolled blood pressure.

However, in people with hypercholesterolaemia or high levels of uric acid, the level of elevated cholesterol and uric acid deteriorates. Conversely, if obese people after vacation tend to gain weight rapidly.

“Heartburn will also come back from eating irregularly and consuming excessively fatty foods, chocolate and cheese,” he said.

3. Illness caused by accidents

Ari explained that the risk of accidents also increases during both away and holiday trips. Fatigue, drowsiness, or less-than-optimal vehicle conditions can be factors in causing accidents on the road. In addition to capricious weather, the possibility of seawater rising and flooding can cause accidents.

Ultimately, according to Ari, a variety of illnesses are to be expected after the holiday, including Covid-19 infection.

“We must always remember that a series of vacations with different activities will have a negative impact on health,” he continued.

Therefore, people who go on vacation away from home must remain vigilant and continue their efforts to prevent Covid-19 and other vacation-related illnesses.
