JawaPos.com – The dynamic conditions triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic are being felt by all nations of the world, not least Indonesia. Therefore, government and society must work together to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 so that it does not spread and be controlled.
The government continues to try to maintain public health and introduce the Covid-19 vaccine as soon as possible. However, according to various health experts, the public should not ignore the 3M health protocol (Wearing a mask, washing hands, keeping your distance).
Dr. Syahrizal Syarif, PhD MPH, FKM UI epidemiologist explained that in May 2020 he noted that in fact there are already 80 percent of countries where epidemics are under control and 20 percent are fluctuating. But today the numbers are different, the epidemic has fluctuated to 64 percent, which means that not only Indonesia, but the world is also changing.
“Then I think the vaccines that have conducted the phase III clinical trials are good news because they give hope that we can get out, or at least find ourselves in a situation where Covid-19 is not a public health problem,” explained Productive Dialogue. with the topic Vaccine + 3M: A Powerful Stance Against Covid-19, which was recently held in Jakarta by the Committee for Handling Covid-19 and National Economic Recovery (KPCPEN).
Statement by Dr. Syahrial that vaccines are good news for everyone was also supported by Theodorus Jodimarlo, a travel entrepreneur who has suffered economically since the Covid-19 pandemic. He welcomed the vaccine because the economy would surely recover with the vaccine.
“We, especially in the world of tourism, have suffered enough for over nine months without income. Vaccines are a breath of fresh air for us because the tourism industry will be hit first and healed last, ‘he said.
In the field of public health, Dr. Syahrizal said vaccines were, in fact, the best health intervention of the 20th century. Thus, according to him, it has been proven from all health interventions that this vaccine can reduce mortality and morbidity.
“I think it is necessary to convince the public to accept the Covid-19 vaccine, it is not easy, so examples from community leaders are needed,” he said.
In addition, while waiting for a vaccine, even after the public has received the vaccine, discipline is still required in the implementation of the 3M Health Protocol. “Since this vaccine must be administered gradually, the emergence of group immunity in society is also gradual” – explains Dr. Syahrizal.
Health protocols are often ignored by the public, especially when 3M operates as a complete package. A UNICEF study by AC Nielsen in six major cities in Indonesia some time ago shows that keeping distance is often neglected.
Survey results showed that keeping the protective distance (47 percent) is lower than wearing a mask (71 percent) and washing hands (72 percent). If such behavior can be consistently implemented by the community, it is believed that it will significantly reduce the Covid-19 transmission chain. The advent of the vaccine will later complete the protection of public health.
While waiting for the immunization program, affected communities such as Theodorus advised to remain productive: “Even if they are not going through normal activities, at least new things can be learned. Of course, we support the government program so that later, when we can leave as we used to, we can come out to help without much fear, ”he concluded.
