The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air heads to BBC iPlayer

The cult 90s TV series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the teen drama Pretty Little Liars will be available to stream on the BBC iPlayer from New Year 2021.

The BBC has acquired the rights to the full sets of both programs, as well as to the upcoming spin-off Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, which will be available at a later date.

This is the first time The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has been available on the BBC since 2004, when the hit comedy Will Smith was shown on BBC Two.

Dan McGolpin, BBC iPlayer controller, said: “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and his all-star cast will entertain and entertain a new generation via the BBC iPlayer, and there’s also an opportunity to re-indulge in the fun for those who liked the BBC screens behind the first time.

“With the new Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists franchise and all the previous Pretty Little Liars franchises, we’ll have more choice than ever to start 2021. Whatever your age or mood, the BBC iPlayer series is waiting for you.”

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air premiered in 1990 and has starred in an impressive 148 episodes, followed by Will Smith as a fictional version of himself, famous for moving to his aunt and uncle in Bel-Air. In the series, he became a lead superstar Smith, who recently reunited with his associates at the The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air meeting on the US streaming service HBO Max.

Smith is also involved in a grim reboot of the nineties comedy with Chris Collins of The Wire as the showrunner who has now been given a two-year contract.

Pretty Little Liars ran for seven seasons from 2010, and followed four teenage girls whose secrets were revealed after the disappearance of their friend Alison DiLaurentis. Based on the best-selling book series Pretty Little Liars, it has become a cult classic and spawned several spin-offs.

The most recent, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, will premiere in the UK on BBC iPlayer and will see Sasha Pieterse return to the role of Alison DiLaurentis as she becomes embroiled in a murder in the seemingly perfect city of Beacon Heights.
