Latvian Caritas Kalvis Kalnins came to Madrid on Wednesday to take part in the final of the bronze world championship that will take place on Saturday.
Kalnin, who starts in the "kumite" group in the weight category of up to 60 kilos, had the first round for free, while in the second he won 2: 0 over the Senegal Dune of Saliū.
In the third round, the Latvian Carat with 4-0 at the head of the South Korean athlete Jon Gudzhu, while in the fourth round Taurus Puuris Saijasombats was defeated.
In the quarterfinals Naoto Saogo, the Japanese, reached the goal with the score 4: 6. Saogo then reached the final, so Kalniņš could take part in the tournament of joy.
He started from the third round with the score 2: 0 exceeding this year's Asian game champion Rifka Ardiansjahu Arrosjid from Indonesia, thus obtaining the right to fight for third place.
Latvian will meet with Darhan Asadilov from Kazakhstan on Saturday at the bronze final.
Kalnins won the bronze medal in the world championship in 2010. In his European Championships he has one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, the latter of which was made in May.
Meanwhile, two victories in this championship are Andrei Ozerov, who in the Kumite group advanced to 84 kilograms, Viktoria Razaeva (-68 kg) and Nikolai Bodrov (-67 kg) won, but Kristin Vicha (-50 kg), Liene Prikaza (-55 kg) kg), Alina Kornishova (-61 kg), Ruslan Sadikov (-75 kg), Dens Sadikov (-84 kg) and Cyril Membo (Kata group).
Latvian Karaites will take part in the "kumite" team competition on Thursday.
In 2020, Karate will participate in the Olympic Games in Tokyo and will be included in the group of world champions. In turn, points of the world ranking can be gained only in Premier League tournaments, as well as the World and European Championships.
