KOTA BARU: The government wants to join several supermarket, retail outlets and hotels across the country in the Malaysian Food Bank program to feed people in need.
Datuk Seri dr. Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the program is being implemented in two phases, starting with a pilot project that started in August and December this year.
"The second phase, covering the whole country, is expected to start in January next year," said Food Bank Malaysia Program Pioneer Project at its launch at Kelantan.
Also present is the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
According to Wan Azizah, the program was aimed at solving the problem of food waste and reducing the operating costs of supermarkets.
"The government is very concerned about reducing the cost of poverty for people, especially the poor.
"This group should be helped to access food supplies as it will ease their burdens and save food costs and make money more important," he said.
He added that the target group of the program was households with a monthly income of less than RM930.
"According to information from eKasih, there are 186 394 head of households in the whole country," he said. – BERNAMA © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
