British scientists associated with the University of Oxford are demanding a tax on red meat. The introduction of such a tax could bring benefits for healthcare in many countries, they argue. Researchers estimate that by 2020, around 2.4 million deaths worldwide will be due to red meat intake. In addition, it provides $ 285 billion in public health costs. She told about her research in the scientific journal Plos One.
In collaboration with research centers in the United States and the United Kingdom, an attempt was made to obtain the optimal tax on red meat in 149 countries to cover as much as possible related health care costs. All over the world they reach the desired average tax rate of 16% on red meat and in Western countries, which should amount to 20%. In the case of processed meat products, the tax rate should be much higher. The optimal rate of tax on red meat would generate about $ 172 billion worldwide, and thus cover 70% of the damage that is consumed in meat products to society.
In their research, the researchers focused mainly on the consequences for public health, but indirectly also mentioned the impact of CO2 emissions on their publication. The tax would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100 million tonnes, mainly due to lower beef consumption.
