Google faces fire of 1,400 employees for firing a black researcher; Internet users are appalled

More than 1,400 Google employees gathered on December 3 to protest against the dismissal of a black employee. Timnit Gebru, who was technical co-chair of Google’s Ethical AI team, previously admitted that she was asked to resign after calling for “silencing marginalized voices” at the company. “ I was fired by @JeffDean for my email to Brain Women and Allies. My business account has been cut off. So I was fired right away 🙂 ” she wrote in a tweet.

In her tweet, she also revealed that Google asked her to withdraw her research article that looked at the potential of an AI tool used by Google and other tech organizations to mimic human hate writing and biased language, the NDP report said. Gebru’s tweet received online support as internet users flocked to share their views and expand the support. As many as 1,400 employees now support an online letter asking Google to explain the dismissal of the Ethics Officer and the reason why it is ordering her to cancel the research.

“Rather than being recognized by Google as an exceptionally gifted and prolific collaborator, Dr. Gebru has faced defense, racism, gas attacks, research censorship, and now retaliation. In an email to Dr. Gebru’s team on the evening of December 2, 2020, Google executives said they had chosen to resign. It’s not true. In their direct correspondence with Dr. Gebru, these directors informed her that her termination was immediate and indicated the e-mail she sent to the Google Brain mailing list on diversity and inclusion as an excuse, ”she reads an excerpt from the letter.
