Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max – One That Others Must Beat!

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max is the biggest and craziest edition ever. But also the most expensive. Buying the largest model with 512 GB of built-in memory costs almost 18,000 crowns. We have looked at the cell phone and we just have to state that while the price is crazy, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is really worth all the money!

Appearance and construction

In terms of design, the iPhone 12 Pro Mac, like the other iPhone 12 models, is unique. The smooth rounded edges we know from the iPhone 11 Pro are gone. Instead, the angular shape found on the new iPad Air, iPad Pro as well as the classic iPhone 4 and iPhone4 5 models returns to all iPhone 12 models and of course also the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Aesthetically, it’s a smart choice that gives Apple’s latest iPhones an exclusive design language and luxury. In addition, the straight edges ensure a more secure grip of the phone.

Like the regular iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is waterproof to six meters for 30 minutes (in terms of IP68 certification), compared to four meters of its predecessor for 30 minutes.

The glass of the new iPhone 12 Pro Max has also been improved in various ways to increase durability. The so-called Ceramic Shield technology means Apple added ceramic crystals during glass casting to make the phone more break-resistant, while the glass on the back is double ionized to make it more scratch resistant.

The glass on the front and back also flush with the metal frame around the phone, which also protects the glass better than on cell phones where the glass is curved at the edges.

Screen and sound

According to DisplayMate, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has the best mobile screen on the market. With a whopping eleven records, it beats all competing cell phones by several lengths. The large 6.7 ″ Super Retina XDR OLED screen achieves top marks for absolute color accuracy, image contrast accuracy, contrast ratio, screen reflection, visible screen resolution, and more.

At the same time, experts at DisplayMate believe that Apple’s lightning-fast processor and graphics engine, as well as the response time of the OLED screen, are sufficient compensation for the fact that the screen of the iPhone 12 Pro Max does not have a refresh rate of 120 Hz, like most Android phones in the same price range. As for power consumption, it still has to settle for a refresh rate of 60Hz.

This suited our user experience well. The colors are slightly warm, as seen in skin tones, white text on a black background, and the like. This is partly due to True Tone, which adjusts the white balance according to the ambient light.

Built-in stereo speakers provide 3D sound via Dolby Atmos and it’s not just marketing crap. Watching videos on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a completely unparalleled experience. (Photo: Peter Gotschalk)

The phone supports video viewing from HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, and the contrast and color reproduction of the film and video look phenomenal. Video has never looked so good on a mobile screen. So you can live with the fact that it does not look as velvety soft when scrolling websites or in mobile menus, as it is, for example, in the OnePlus 8 Pro.

The sound is also the best for an iPhone so far. Built-in stereo speakers provide 3D sound through Dolby Atmos, and it’s not just marketing nonsense. Try recreating this trailer on your iPhone 12 Pro Max and you’ll clearly hear what we mean. Playing games or watching videos on your own iPhone will never be the same again!

The phone comes with three cameras, 12MP 13mm f / 2.4, 120 degree ultra wide angle and 12MP 26mm f / 1.6 wide angle. In addition, a 65 mm telephoto lens with optical image stabilization and 2.5x zoom. As something completely new, the camera also has a LiDAR scanner that is used to scan the pixel depth of an object. Even the iPhone Xs Max was Apple’s iPhones far behind the front of the camera compared to Android competitors, especially Huawei and Samsung. First with the iPhone 11 Pro, Apple provided an acceptable camera phone, with both ultra-wide and telephoto, as well as a more light-sensitive sensor and better image processing.

However, with the new iPhone 12 Pro models, Apple takes a seven-mile step ahead of the camera. The iPhone 12 Pro Max not only has a much better camera than its predecessor. It is simply one of the best camera phones money can buy.

The phone is equipped with three cameras with 5x optical zoom. Including 12MP 13mm f / 2.4, 120 degree ultra wide angle and 12MP 26mm f / 1.6 wide angle. In addition, a 65 mm telephoto lens with optical image stabilization and 2.5x zoom.

As something completely new, the camera also has a LiDAR scanner that is used to scan the pixel depth of an object. The advantage of LiDAR is that the camera focuses better in low light and that wide-angle portraits in low light are more evenly lit and better exposed. LiDAR scanning doesn’t work over long distances, but it does work well when it’s dark and the subject is close enough. LiDAR is also used if you want to scan and measure a room, for example for augmented reality, where you can play with festive effects in AR applications.

The front camera is called True Depth in Apple’s language, and apart from supporting Face ID, which identifies the user of the cell phone, it has the same 12MP resolution as the other cameras.

Summa summarum provides iPhone 12 Pro Max images of unparalleled high quality. Not only when it comes to subjects in low light. The camera’s HDR properties are also useful for taking landscape photos, among other things, and to date provide the best reproduction of skin tones in daylight from any mobile camera.

Performance and features

Beneath the screen is Apple’s newest and most powerful processor yet, the A14 Bionic, which we first introduced to the new iPad Air. The A14 Bionic is a 5nm chip that Apple says offers room for an unprecedented number of transistors. This makes the iPhone 12 Pro Max lightning fast, which is also confirmed by our benchmarks. In almost all tests, Benchmark sweeps the floor with top models such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, and Sony Xperia 5 II.

On the other hand, keep in mind that the little USB charger we know from previous iPhone models is not included in the box with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. A familiar Lightning to USB cable is included, but the charger must be purchased separately. For example, Apple’s recently introduced MagSafe charger – a wireless charger with a circular Qi charging plate that is magnetic and located on the back of the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Many users obviously get frustrated that you won’t get a charger when you buy that much money for the phone, but Apple’s argument is that it’s a waste of resources as many of us still have small chargers lying around in large quantities. And this is not entirely wrong.

It’s nothing less than the best mobile phone Apple has ever made. The large screen gets top marks for color reproduction, contrast and brightness and is absolutely fantastic for viewing photos and videos. The performance is impressive, keeping the iPhone 12 Pro Max way ahead of the competition. And when you can really use 5G soon, you have a blazingly fast cell phone.

In addition, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is in our opinion the best camera phone on the market today. Not only for amateurs, because thanks to the numerous possibilities of the cameras (including LiDAR) and intelligent image processing on the phone, photography lovers also have a powerful tool in their pocket.
