Neymar does not catch the role of a dozen and destroys Tuhelya's plans. All about the tactics of the Champions League match "Napoli" – "PSG" – UEFA Champions League 2018-2019 – Football

  • Tuchel moved to three defenders because of a defeat in the previous match

  • The PSG attack is related to Neymar. It's bad
  • "Napoli" Ancelotti – simple but effective
  • Finally Tukhel let Cavani out. It was late

Starting plans

The third round match of "Napoli" "PSG" began as part of the 4-2-3-1 scheme with Neymar in the role of tens of freely moving on the pitch, Mbappa (extreme winger) and Cavani (sole attacker). In the first half Parisians did not create any dangerous moment and did not hit. In the break Tuhelj defended the game by going to three defenders (3-4-2-1), and after the match he blew on the team like never before: "The players do not stick to my plan." For the first half hour they played football. Meunier, who confirmed: in the first half the team simply did not follow the trainer's instructions. Tuhela really liked the other half. Therefore, the decision of the German game coach according to the plan with three defenders, despite the fact that in the French Championship "PSG" most often uses 4-2-3-1, was predictable.

Tuchel did not copy the approach from the second half of the first game. Especially for the second match he invented a new tactic. Like any super coach, the German is always looking for a compromise between the need to base all the stars and the balance of the team. This time Tuhelj sent Cavani to the bench, laying the foundations for Draxler, Di Maria, Neymar and Mbappa. The scheme of the "PSG" most resembled 3-5-2, where one of the eight (Draxler) was much deeper than the second (Di Maria). Of the important players, Rabio was also absent, most likely for disciplinary reasons (he was late for training, he was lazy in a match against Napoli), and Marquinhos (Tuchel preferred another middle defender, Kerera).

Ancelotti used the same composition and the same tactics (4-4-2 in line) as in the Paris match.

Problems of "PSG" in the attack

Tuchel is a Guardiola fan and tries to play like the famous Catalan. One of the most important rules of positional soccer (Pep's method) is that each player must move in a specific field, not in the direction of the ball. "You do not have to wander around the field, the ball will come to you," the words Barcelona coach told Denis Suarez, express this principle as accurately as possible. Neymar, like Messi in his time, breaks it – only more often and more fiercely. In the first half, despite the formal attachment to the left half-collar, he found himself everywhere – in the center, right, left, and even in the depths, near the central defenders. When he got tired of watching the partners throw the ball apathetically, the Brazilian almost took it and drew it himself.

Neymar runs to the ball instead of occupying the empty zone.

The Brazilian is a great player. Even playing tactlessly illiterate and disrupting the installation, it creates the most dangerous moments. After Neymar passed through the whole field, Meunier missed a wonderful moment; after opening it in the free zone and the ingenious drawer Mbappa helped.

The problem is that Neymar's behavior limits the "PSG" attack – it ceases to be collective and becomes dependent on the leader. 45% of attacks went through the flank where Neymar played – and this is not a tactical idea, but simply an indicator of Brazilian selfishness. She will also stop being more primitive. Moving from the position, it breaks the team's structure. Too many players in the help line, but not enough in the attack line. This leads to sad consequences. For example, Tukhel is a fan of the combination of short and medium-sized Paz, but because of the tactical lack of knowledge of PSG players, the Parisian attack is often limited to throws behind Mbabpe.

Another structural problem of "PSG" was finding too many people behind the ball line. According to another positional rule, one person should be more behind the line of the ball than in the opponent's first line of pressure. Conventionally, if you are pushed by two attackers, there should be three defenders behind the ball. The goal is to optimally fill the space behind the ball in which hardware runs that develops the attack. Due to Verratti's and Draxler's mistakes, "PSG" was left behind a ball with five of them (against Insigne and Mertens). Quite expected, given that it was one of the first matches in the 3-5-2 system.

Five Parisians in the zone where they should be three

Ancelotti did not invent anything genius, but defeated Tuchel

"PSG" and "Napoli" played both matches during the draw, but in each of them the Italian team seemed more solid and tactically competent. Depending on the situation, Ancelotti easily changed his plan – in Paris he defended the PSG defenders with aggressive pressure in Italy, when he had to play, and for almost the entire first half closed the team in the middle of the field, so that the strength of the second half of Napoli remained. With the ball, the Carlo team also did not show anything crafty, but unlike "PSG" it implemented the original plan.

Ancelotti knew exactly what he was doing. On the one hand, to minimize the risk of a PSG counterattack (Mbappa, yes), the Italians almost did not play and went through the middle. Being under pressure, the defenders of "Napoli" began a long transfer to the attackers' area. As a result, PSG helpers touched the ball much more often than Napoli's midfielders, but they are unlikely to comment on the quality of football.

The new "Napoli" does not play on its own. They, like every other Ancelotti team, mainly use the weaknesses of the enemy. The main weak point of "PSG" in defense is defense of flanks. The system of five defenders in principle assumes a small number of players in these zones (one, not two, as in the schemes with four defenders). The situation was exacerbated by the fact that the three helpers of Verratti – Di Maria – Draxler were too close to each other and did not hide the place next to the extreme defenders.

Two other important disadvantages of "PSG" are semi-dead pressure and the di Maria zone. Modern stars attack a lot of lazy people. If you only have stars in the attack, that means everyone will be lazy. In order to overcome the pressure of "PSG", "Napoli" there was no one pass for the goalkeeper. Neymar or Mbappa, who closed one of the central defenders for the first time, fled to Ospina. Ospina gave the ball to the center defender, who usually did not return any of the star acquisitions. "Napoli" used this weakness in a different way – either through the saturation of the Di Maria zone, or through the diagonals of Ruiz's displacement, or through the displacements of Allan and Gamshik. Such movements tangled in Veratti, Meunier and Di Maria – they lost their opponents and allowed Napoli to set the ball in the penalty area.

Albiol gives free Ruiz

  • All short applications and combinations of "PSG" ended when the team was under the pressure of "Napoli". Another indicator that proves that something is wrong with Parisians.
  • Neymar does not take on the role of a dozen – perhaps Tuchel should try him in the position of Sana or Bernardo Silva. There his endless feints will be more in place than in the middle of the field.
  • With access to the Cavani field "PSG" switches to 3-4-2-1. In fact, nothing changed, but with Edison Mbappa had the chance to score a goal.
