Luke Rockhold makes no statements about withdrawing from mixed martial arts, but he probably fought in his last fight.
The former UFC champion and Strikeforce last competed in July, where he suffered a jaw fracture in defeat against Jan Blachowicz in his debut at 205 pounds. After this fight, Rockhold took time off to regenerate, and although he recently signed up to meet second ADCC winner Nick Rodriguez on Polaris on November 30, his plans for the future will probably not require another fight.
"My head is happy with where I am now," Rockhold told MMA Fighting. "I did many things in this sport. I'm not trying to be a headline. I am not trying to say that I will retire and then want to come back. I don't like closing the door to things in life.
"At the moment I'm happy I'm not fighting. It's good to focus on other things. "
In recent years, Rockhold has gained recognition in the business outside of the cage, including a lucrative modeling contract with Polo Ralph Lauren, where he became one of the faces of the brand. Recently, he also began to act with several already closed film roles.
More than anything else, Rockhold is satisfied with the work he does, which does not include fighting in mixed martial arts.
"Fighting requires a lot. I did it, I was at the top of the game. I just don't have the same passion, hunger at the moment, "said Rockhold. "I am excited to go into other areas of my life. I know I have many fans. Sorry, I don't fight, but you never know. Maybe someday I'll do it, but I don't anticipate it at the moment.
"A few struggles with each other to entertain myself during this process, I think people who tune in will have fun. I will bring it to this child, and if I do something different, I am sure it will be fun and fun. "
In financial terms, Rockhold is in a situation where he does not have to fight again, which allows him to make a decision about his future based on what is really best for him, instead of going back to necessity.
If he ever decides to compete again, a 35-year-old veteran will do it for the right reasons, which means he wants to fight – not because he has to fight.
"I'm fine. I can choose what I want to do, ”said Rockhold. "I have several companies that I work with and checks come in many different ways. I'm not like the rest of the guys I have to chase and hit the ground in battle, jiu-jitsu or whatever. There are other areas of life and I can devote some energy and focus on these things.
"Of course you can't fight forever. I can make more money out of the cage, so if I can do it, why not? You don't have to deal with political shit * that involves fighting and the UFC, everything we know. I like this. It makes me happy. "
Just because the fights are behind him does not mean that Rockhold gives in to challenges in different directions of his life.
In this case, November 30 faces one of the best prospects in the world, because you want to try and at the same time have fun doing something new.
"I'm not trying to do this job. I'm just having fun with it, "said Rockhold. "I'm not going there and chasing all these struggles, but I pick a few guys and prove that I'm still at the top of my game. Why not?
"I'm an extremist. I will find everything that will challenge me in my life. I'll try to solve it damn well. I will try to beat it. I have a lot to beat. I think it will always be this way. I'm not trying to beat the ground fight. I can do many other things. The fight absorbs you. It absorbs your body, mind and consumes your life and is unable to enjoy other things in your life. It does not chase and absorbs it, it liberates. I'm excited about doing what I do and pursuing further goals. "
In pursuit of these extremes, Rockhold even jumped at the Montana rodeo, where he finished second in the wrestling competition. The former UFC champion blames "Montana whiskey" for the improvised decision to get involved in a rodeo, but he had a great time.
"I think I should have taken first place," said Rockhold. "I'm very pissed at this. I wanted to go back and question it. I got a buckle. "
Regardless of whether it is about struggling with rivalries, acting roles or maybe another rodeo, Rockhold is now in a better place, which is why it's completely okay, putting the fight behind him now.
"I'm glad I'm not fighting. I'm glad to be back on the west coast. I do what I do and I'm not worried about the burden of fighting over my head and continuing it, ”said Rockhold.
"I've been doing it for almost 14 years. I have conquered two different companies. I was without a doubt the best in the world. I sleep well with it. Few guys can do this. "
Despite all the signs that indicate that Rockhold never returns to the cage, he is not ready to say it with absolute certainty.
Therefore, he refuses to close the door completely, using the word "retirement" when it comes to his combat career.
"I never live on any other," said Rockhold. "I am never someone who gives up completely. I don't want to block my life anywhere. I always leave the door open. Yes, I live my life. I have done well so far. I intend to maintain this mentality and lifestyle.
"I do what I want and I create different stores. I love it."
